Embracing Silver: A Guide to Grey Hair Care

Silver hair is stunning — when it's healthy. Our curated guide to keeping your grey luminous, hydrated, and full of life.

Grey hair care guide

There is something genuinely powerful about a woman who wears her silver with intention. Grey hair — whether a few luminous streaks or a full head of platinum — is not a concession. It's a choice. And like any beautiful choice, it deserves care.

Grey hair has a different structure to pigmented hair. It tends to be coarser, drier, and more porous — which means it absorbs environmental pollutants and product residue more readily, and can take on a yellow or brassy tone over time. The right routine makes all the difference.

The Grey Hair Care Routine

Purple Shampoo: Your Weekly Essential

Yellow and brassy tones in grey hair are caused by mineral deposits, pollution, and UV exposure. A purple or violet-toned shampoo neutralises these warm tones using colour theory — purple sits opposite yellow on the colour wheel. Use it once or twice a week in place of your regular shampoo, leaving it on for 3–5 minutes. Don't overuse it: too frequent application can leave a lilac tint. Follow with a deeply hydrating conditioner every time.

Hydration Is Non-Negotiable

Grey hair lacks the melanin that helps retain moisture, making it inherently drier than pigmented hair. A rich, sulphate-free conditioner used every wash is essential — not optional. Once a week, replace your conditioner with a deep conditioning mask and leave it on for 10–15 minutes. Look for ingredients like argan oil, shea butter, and keratin. Well-hydrated grey hair has a beautiful luminosity; dry grey hair looks dull and wiry.

Protect From Heat and UV

Heat styling accelerates dryness and can cause grey hair to become brittle. Always use a heat protectant spray before blow-drying or using hot tools, and keep temperatures moderate — grey hair doesn't need as much heat to style as you might think. UV exposure is equally damaging: it oxidises the hair shaft and contributes to yellowing. A UV-protective hair mist or leave-in treatment used before going outdoors is a simple and effective habit.

Embrace the Right Cut

Grey hair often looks its most striking when cut with intention. Blunt cuts and bobs show off the colour beautifully. Layers can add movement and prevent the hair from looking flat. Talk to your stylist about cuts that work with your hair's natural texture — grey hair often has more wave or curl than it did when pigmented, and working with that texture rather than against it produces the most effortless results.

Scalp Care Matters More Than You Think

A healthy scalp is the foundation of healthy hair at any age. After 50, the scalp produces less sebum, which can lead to dryness, flakiness, and a reduction in hair density. A gentle scalp massage with a nourishing oil (argan, jojoba, or rosehip) once a week stimulates circulation and supports hair growth. Look for shampoos with scalp-soothing ingredients like tea tree, salicylic acid, or zinc if you experience any dryness or irritation.

A Word on Confidence

The most important thing you can bring to your silver hair is confidence. Grey hair that is well cared for, well cut, and worn with intention is one of the most striking looks a woman can have. It signals exactly who you are: someone who has arrived, who knows herself, and who doesn't need anyone's permission to be beautiful.
